Who is the visa for?
Foreign spouses of South African citizens and permanent residents.
- The applicant must be legally married to a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Must be accompanied by a written undertaking from the South African citizen or permanent resident spouse in which he/she accepts full financial-, emotional- and physical responsibility for the applicant.
- Applicants are obligated to subject themselves to an interview in order to convince the Director-General that they are parties to a genuine spousal relationship.
The process in obtaining a Spousal Visa is completely similar for homosexual married couples as it is for heterosexual married couples.
Holding a spousal visa is a huge advantage when it comes to working, studying or setting up a business in South Africa.
Foreigners who have a spousal permit are able to work, study and run or own a business (no endorsements required).
